The Business of Pet Writing Conference
The Business of Pet Writing Conference Returns to New York City's Hotel Pennsylvania for Year Three.
The Third Annual Business of Pet Writing is becoming as synonymous with February in New York City as the Westminster Kennel Club. Held the weekend before the internationally-renowned dog show on Saturday, February 12, the pet writing conference brings together pet lovers who also write for a living with veterinarians, publishing and pet industry professionals. Together, they spend an intense day of workshops, seminars and one-on-one meetings focused on the cutting edge of pet journalism and the ever-growing popularity of books in this genre.
It's clear while looking at the bestseller lists, that books particularly about dogs, appear nearly every month. Besides the mega-seller, Marley and Me (Harper Collins, 2005), other recent, winning titles include: Saving Cinnamon (St. Martin's Press, 2009) and Scent of The Missing (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010). To compete in this market, more than ever, writers need to be on the top of their game learning from industry insiders about what makes a successful book.
Much discussion will be focused on the importance of newer, virtual communication vehicles, like web sites, blog's and social media and the necessity for writers to get comfortable with these marketing aspects of the profession.
The day's events begin at 7:30 am on Saturday, February 12. Participating writers will have the rare opportunity to meet with editors and agents on a one-to-one basis to pitch book and article ideas. Also present are notable veterinarians and prominent representatives from the pet food industry who are there to assist pet writers with other research, book and article ideas among other things.
The lineup at The Business of Pet Writing Conference is a virtual Who's Who of publishing, including Writer's Digest Books' Chuck Sambuchino, Folio Literary Management's Jeff Kleinman and five-time Billboard Magazine Award winner, Valerie Smaldone.
Moreover, this year The Pet Socialite, Inc. is offering a scholarship in memory of Mordecai Siegal, author of 35 pet books, including Good Dog, Bad Dog (Henry Holt and Co., revised edition 1991), The Cornell Book of Cats (Villard Books, 1st edition 1989), and UC Davis Book of Dogs (Collins Reference, 1995). See Scholarship offer on DWAA Home page.
Sponsors for the third annual pet writing conference include: Greenies, Nutro, American Pet Products Association, Bow Tie Inc., Comfort Zone, and Dyson.
